PROJECT
Southpoint Shopping Centre is a food-based shopping centre in Hillsdale, in Sydney’s south eastern suburbs. Woolworths Supermarket, Coles Supermarket, Trade Secret, Go-Lo, Australia Post and Crossroads anchor the Centre with 23 specialty shops completing the retail mix.
Floth was appointed to provide mechanical, electrical, hydraulic & fire services on the 6,000m² retail centre refurbishment, reconfiguration and extension, new multi deck car park and a new 16 storey residential tower with over 116 apartments.
The special challenges faced on this project included maintaining the operation of the existing shopping centre while extensions and refurbishment works were undertaken, and also extending and reconfiguring the orientation of the existing supermarket. Specifically, challenges included the need to swap electrical supply, relocate the supermarket plant, and replace the existing sewer mains. Floth developed a detailed sequential program of works to ensure that the shopping centre could remain operational throughout the refurbishment.
Other challenges included the amalgamation and relocation of numerous food premises and the location of exhausts from the food premises. The existing mechanical design for the exhaust fans did not address the impacts on residential apartments located above the shopping centre. To address this challenge, Floth designed the exhaust to include treatment systems to eliminate odour and waste, and ensured that the distance between the exhaust output and residents was maximised. Since completion in 2004, there have been no complaints from residents about noise and odour from the food exhaust output.
For each of these constraints, Floth developed innovative cost-effective solutions, tailored specifically to the client’s needs for the project.
